The "Weston Supports" initiative provided community-based support from the residents of Weston, CT to the Soldiers and Families of The Second Brigade Combat Team ("2BCT") 1st Infantry Division, of the U. S. Army while it was deployed "downrange" in Iraq.
2BCT, also known as the "Dagger Brigade", deployed as a 4,300 Soldier Army unit which included infantry, armor, artillery, medical and support regiments and battalions. Units of the Brigade were located in various outposts in Western Baghdad and Ramadi and in Camp Liberty, Camp Justice and Camp Taji. Soldiers of the Brigade and their families have been based in Schweinfurt, Germany. The Post in Schweinfurt has its own school system, housing and recreational and support facilities.
After its redeployment from Iraq in November 2007, the Dagger Brigade was “reflagged” as the 172nd Infantry Brigade, known as the Blackhawks. The headquarters of the Brigade is moving to Grafenwoehr, Germany, along with many of the battalions and companies comprising the Brigade.
The objectives of our program have been to:
When the Blackhawk Brigade deploys to Iraq again, Weston Supports will once again provide support to the Soldiers and Families of the Brigade. There are many different ways you can get involved. You can:
Weston Supports engaged in a major drive to solicit funds and airline miles from friends of the Dagger Brigade to provide tickets for Wounded Dagger Brigade Soldiers and Families of Fallen Dagger Soldiers in the United States to travel to Schweinfurt to reunite with the Brigade. 112 Soldiers and Family members traveled to Schweinfurt in January 2008 to participate in memorial ceremonies and return celebrations.
You can contribute to this effort through a donation of funds or of miles. Details are located under "Return to Schweinfurt".
The Weston Supports initiative is a private effort focused on supporting the Troops and their Families. It does not have a political objective. The use of the town name of Weston does not imply endorsement by any organization but does reflect the involvement by members and groups in the community. We do not represent or speak for the Dagger Brigade or the Blackhawk Brigade.
